  1. Could you give me some advice? I'm a teenage crossfit beginner and I would like to complement it with paleo but it's really hard when your family eats lots of non paleo foods ( especially junk food). What can I do ?

    That’s a tough one.  First off, I want to write a disclaimer saying that if you’re a teenager, you should not listen to anything I say.  I would hate to get an angry letter from your parents claiming I advised their teenager to leave the family and start a commune.

    Ok, now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I think you should leave your family and start a commune (kidding!).  No, seriously, all you can do, assuming you don’t have the money to buy your own groceries, is encourage your family to go paleo too.  Show them the different information available and blogs that you follow, and explain to them why you want to adapt to this lifestyle.  And make sure you show them pictures of delicious looking paleo food, so they don’t think they’re about to eat sticks and twigs.  The key to anyone’s heart is through their stomach!  Start by showing them these!  Good luck!

            Setiap tahunnya, tanggal 8 Maret selalu diperingati wanita sejagat sebagai Hari Perempuan Internasional. Sayangnya, masih ada saja wanita-wanita yang tidak memperhatikan kesehatannya. Banyak gejala gangguan kurang gizi yang diabaikan wanita.

            Dibandingkan pria, hidup wanita cenderung lebih teratur. Harapan hidup pun biasanya lebih tinggi. Tapi karena banyak urusan yang harus diselesaikan, baik urusan pekerjaan dan rumah tangga, tidak sedikit wanita yang mengabaikan kondisi tubuhnya sendiri.

            Seperti misalnya kurang gizi, banyak wanita tidak menyadari dirinya mengalami kondisi tersebut. Padahal gejalanya bisa terjadi dalam kesehariannya.

            Berikut beberapa gejala yang menandakan bahwa wanita kurang gizi, seperti dilansir Boldsky, Sabtu (9/3/2013):

            1. Kelelahan
            Gejala utama dan paling banyak terjadi pada wanita kurang gizi adalah kelelahan. Wanita yang kurang gizi tidak akan memiliki energi untuk melakukan kegiatan, bahkan untuk makan sekalipun. Ketika otot tidak mendapatkan cukup nutrisi penting seperti kalsium, otot akan menjadi lelah dan akibatnya tubuh kehilangan energi.

            2. Tekanan darah rendah
            Jika Anda mengalami kurang gizi, tekanan darah akan selalu rendah (hipotensi). Jika Anda tidak makan karbohidrat dan lemak, tubuh akan kekurangan glukosa dalam darah, yang akhirnya berpengaruh pada tekanan darah.

            3. Sering pusing
            Ketika tekanan darah drop, tubuh akan kehilangan keseimbangan dan kepala akan terasa berputar. Kondisi ini menyebabkan Anda mengalami pusing dan sakit kepala.

            4. Anemia
            Anemia di kalangan wanita sangatlah umum. Anemia terjadi karena tubuh wanita tidak mendapatkan cukup makanan yang mengandung zat besi. Kondisi ini makin diperparah ketika wanita sedang menstruasi atau setelah melahirkan.

            5. Sensitif dan mudah tersinggung
            Perubahan hormon di tubuh wanita terjadi begitu mudah. Ketika tubuh wanita tidak mendapatkan cukup nutrisi, keseimbangan hormon pun terpengaruhi. Ini menjadi satu penyebab suasana hati wanita yang tidak baik.

            6. Rambut rontok
            Rambut dan kulit menjadi sehat bila tubuh Anda juga sehat. Jika Anda tidak mendapatkan cukup makanan yang bergizi, rambut akan menjadi rapuh dan mudah patah. Jika Anda mengalami kerontokan rambut yang tidak normal, bisa jadi itu tanda-tanda Anda mengalami kurang gizi.

            7. Menstruasi tidak teratur
            Ketika tubuh tidak mendapatkan cukup zat besi dan kalsium, tubuh akan menjadi ‘kelaparan’. Dalam kondisi tersebut, tubuh mulai menyimpan nutrisi dan menghentikan darah menstruasi. Kekurangan zat besi adalah salah satu alasan umum untuk ketidakteraturan menstruasi.

            8. Berat badan turun
            Kurang gizi bukan hanya perkara kekurangan vitamin dan mineral. Ketika Anda mengurangi karbohidrat dan protein, tubuh juga akan menjadi kurang gizi. Pada kasus ini, gejalanya bisa terlihat dengan penurunan berat badan.

            9. Gampang sakit
            Ketika tubuh kekurangan zat pembangun imunitas seperti vitamin C, zinc dan nutrisi vital lainnya, tubuh akan menjadi gampang sakit. Anda juga perlu curiga ketika penyakit yang Anda derita tak kunjung sembuh.

            10. Kulit mudah memar
            Kulit yang mudah memar pertanda pembuluh darah kapiler Anda rapuh. Kondisi ini terjadi bila jumlah platelet darah berkurang. Ini berarti Anda membutuhkan vitamin K dan folat dalam jumlah banyak.

                lemon water, why you should drink it

                1. Boosts your immune system: Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds.  They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure.

                2. Balances pH: Drink lemon water everyday and you’ll reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one of the most alkaline foods around. Yes, lemon has citric acid but it does not create acidity in the body once metabolized.

                3. Helps with weight loss:   Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet (see #2) lose weight faster.
                 
                4. Aids digestion:  Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that required for digestion. Efficient digestion reduces heartburn and constipation.

                5. Is a diuretic: Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, which helps purify it. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.

                6. Clears skin:  The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. It can actually be applied directly to scars to help reduce their appearance.

                7. Freshens breath: Not only this, but it can help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. The citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so you should monitor this. I admit, I’m slightly worried about it.

                8. Relieves respiratory problems: Warm lemon water helps get rid of chest infections and halt those pesky coughs. It’s thought to be helpful to people with asthma and allergies too.

                9. Keeps you zen: Vitamin C is one of the first things depleted when you subject your mind and body to stress. As mentioned previously, lemons are chock full of vitamin C.

                10. Helps kick the coffee habit:  After I have a glass of hot lemon water, I actually don’t crave coffee in the morning. This is weird, I can’t explain it, but I’ll take it.

                  Having a busy schedule makes remembering to eat breakfast crucial. It’s hard to remember to eat breakfast when we have so many things going on, but working on a hungry stomach leads you to feeling irritable, forgetful, lightheaded, and fatigue. Lets be honest, who wants to work with someone like that? Certainly not me! I tend to overeat later in the day if I skip my breakfast which leads me to keep feeling irritable and fatigue. It’s better to keep that healthy balance of meals. Your health is always more important than your busy schedule, so put yourself first and enjoy your breakfast! One of my favorite desserts is chocolate covered strawberries so I decided to take it to my oatmeal bowl. It’s still very quick and tasty and can fit into any busy schedule! What’s a few minutes?

                  Ingredients:

                  • 1/2 Cup Quaker Oats
                  • 1 Cup Water
                  • 1/2 Cup Strawberry Slices
                  • 3 Chocolate Candy Melts Broken Into Pieces
                  • 1 Tbsp Skim Milk

                  Directions:

                  1. In a microwave safe bowl heat Quaker Oats and water for 2 minutes
                  2. Add milk, strawberries, and chocolate.

                  Calories: 210, Carbs: 35g, Protein 5g, Fat 3g, Fiber 5g

                    1. NEXT

                      Monday’s episode in Penang is, in my opinion, one of the best shot, best edited episodes ever. It helped that we were in what cinematographers call a “shot rich environment”—where it seems that everywhere you point, there are bright colors, characters, beautiful things. The food is generally thought of (even by many proud food nerds in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur) to be among the very best in the Straits— and I think you’ll see why. Penang is the kind of place that ruined me for an ordinary life.

                      I feel inexorably attached to Malaysia for many reasons, but one of them is that I got there early in my career as a traveler, wasn’t really ready for it, and was changed by the place. It seduced and overwhelmed me at the same time. The smells and colors and flavors—the look and sound of the place, the at times impenetrable mix of Indian, Malay and Chinese cultures—it ****ed me all up.

                      I tried to capture that in the first scene—a shot of a woman’s fingers, unwrapping nasi lemak from its traditional banana leaf package. That’s a particularly vivid image for me, and it’s yet another testament to the ZPZ crew that they were able to recreate it so perfectly. Scenes like this matter to me. And the ability to imagine a thing—and then see it executed brilliantly, that matters too.

                      It was never my intention on NO RESERVATIONS to be a reporter, a critic, an advocate. It was also never my intention to provide audiences with “everything” they needed to know about a place—or even a balanced or comprehensive overview. I am a storyteller. I go places, I come back. I tell you how the places made me feel. Through the use of powerful tools like great photography, skillful editing, sound mixing, color correction, music (which is often composed specifically for the purpose) and brilliant producers, I can—in the very best cases—make you feel a little bit like I did at the time. At least I hope so. It’s a manipulative process. It’s also a deeply satisfying one.

                      As you may or may not have heard, at a point in the not too far away future, the Zero  Point Zero team and I will be moving on to do what we do elsewhere. We recently filmed the last shot of our last episode. That means you’ve got 9 new episodes of NO RESERVATIONS still yet to be edited, or waiting in the pipeline to be aired. We have yet to shoot 10 new episodes of THE LAYOVER, which we’ll do this June and July. After that, I’m planning on taking my first extended break in eight years. A “normal” family vacation—where I plan to putter to excess, dote on my daughter—and do what people are said to do on vacation. Also, I’ll be writing a book.

                      Rest assured that whatever ZPZ and I do in the future, we will not be dumbing it down, we will not change our basic natures, we will not be morphing into something we are not. We will continue to do what we do. And have a hell of a good time doing it.
